A light's come on.
Illuminants and their efficiency.

Every illuminant has a specific luminous efficacy, expressed in lumen per Watt (lm/W). This shows the link between the luminous flux emitted by the map and the amount of electrical power it consumes. White-lighting high-pressure mercury lamps have a luminous efficacy of 35-60 lm/W. The European Union links the trading permit to system performance.

The high-pressure mercury discharge system does not comply with the norm and from 2015 will no longer be awarded the CE mark and will not be available for sale. So there is a need to act in the case of almost half of Germany's street lights. Currently, high-pressure sodium vapor lamps are the most efficient, at 90-130 lm/W.

Halogen metal vapor lamps and modern compact fluorescent lamps are also highly efficient. The use of light produced by LEDs, which meets street lighting requirements as specified by the DIN norm, is not yet financially viable.

Replacing high-pressure mercury lamps with modern illuminants is mandatory under the Ecodesign Directive. It is the first step towards more efficient city lighting.
